North Tamarind
Suburban Neighborhood in West Palm Beach, Florida
“People can see the growth in that area,” says realtor Lisa Civin of The Sheehan Agency. “The homes are pretty affordable, especially coming up from Miami, and it’s a very good place to look for future investment.”
A neighborhood rich in history
North Tamarind has a rich past in the heart of West Palm Beach’s historically Black Northwest Downtown. Also called Coleman Park, the neighborhood began as a pineapple farm before its first residents made it home. In 1894, Black laborers working on Palm Beach Island began moving to the newly designated City of West Palm Beach on the mainland after their existing settlement burned down. It eventually became the site of the spring training for Negro league players like Jackie Robinson and Hank Aaron. Though the area has seen its ups and downs, like a hurricane in the 1920s that killed thousands and the closure of the neighborhood’s Black high school in 1970, its future is bright with city and state-backed revitalization efforts. “People can see the growth in that area,” says realtor Lisa Civin of The Sheehan Agency. “The homes are pretty affordable, especially coming up from Miami, and it’s a very good place to look for future investment.”
Modest homes on compact lots
Homes in North Tamarind are modestly sized and brightly colored bungalows, Craftsman houses, ranch houses and duplexes on equally compact lots. Many of the neighborhood’s original homes are still standing 100 years later. Steady growth in this neighborhood means that houses have been built or remodeled continuously since the 1920s. Houses here have recently sold for $200,000-$450,000, with some new construction selling for $500,000 and up.
